Hauling water, Rajasthan, India
Hauling water, Cartesian systemRajasthan,
India
Rajasthan is one of India's driest states. The hilly countryside between Ranakpur and Udaipur has many wells operated by cattle. The animals are tethered to a pole; as they walk around, a series of wooden gears drive a bucket wheel which brings water from a well. The largest machines can elevate the precious fluid ten metres.
Nowadays, many farmers use gasoline pumps, but in this section of the country there are still many Cartesian wells and the farmers, who ride the pole, take it easy for an hour or so!
