the walls of Thubchen Gompa: Mustang region
Thubchen Gompa, Lo Manthang, Mustang region
The capital of Mustang is a tiny walled town with narrow alleys inviting exploration. Turning one corner brings you to the imposing walls of Thubchen Gompa. The rammed earth walls are painted with a slurry of ochre-coloured clay every year or two. The black border near the roof line is a 40cm layer of brush wood which traditionally tops the walls of both houses and gompas as a decorative element.
On our trek to Mustang in July 2003 we have three nights in Lo. Time to explore the region and the town.
