Terraces of Tsum, Manaslu region

Terraces, Tsum region, Nepal

I counted almost 150 separate terrace levels in this picture and there are probably another one hundred out of camera range. The gorges of the Bhuri Gandaki valley are very steep and deep. I am not aware of any archaeology in the region, but people have probably been here for about a thousand years. Initially they would have used the easy flatter slopes but population pressure would have driven them to farm in more difficult areas. Hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of hours, of labour would have been needed to build these fields across the valley.

Running up the centre is a trail which, during the rainy season is a fast flowing stream. Fortunately we don't go that way! The dark green crop is paddy-rice and the dun coloured areas are fields of amaranthus. This photo is another example of the wonderful variety of the Manaslu trek.
