Fine weather - and less so! Manaslu region
Sumdo village, Nupri region, Nepal
These two photos were taken six days apart. It features the entrance chorten to the village of Sumdo. We take our Footprints trek around Manaslu in September - October. Our choice of this time is deliberate and is based on weather. Any mountain region has 'weather' but in the Himalaya there are periods when conditions in the high regions are more suited for trekking: a time when the days are clear and the passes free from snow. On the Manaslu trek this is usually the case during the autumn.
Our trek in 1996 had problems. The day before crossing the Larkye La the weather started to threaten snow. Diane set off with the group but abandoned any thought of going on when snow started to fall heavily. The group, the Sherpas and porters retreated to Sumdo village as snow continued to fall, and fall. It did not stop for four days and left such a heavy swathe of snow that the Larkye and Thorung passes were closed for several weeks. The group headed down valley, taking a low altitude trail through isolated Gurung villages. They had a great time but did not cross the pass.
If trek with us Around Manaslu in 2004 we hope that the weather will be benign, but "..mountains are mountains!"
