Sabhayanaka Natraja temple
Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, South India
The bull in the foreground gives a clue to the significant deity in this temple. The bull is Nandi, the 'vehicle' of Shiva, who is always seen near the entrance to the main shrine. Chidambaram is one of the holiest sites in south India because it is the mythical site of the tandava, Shiva's cosmic dance.
In the distance is the gopuram, an entrance gate to the temple. In the south these are huge structures, profusely decorated with carvings of the gods.
