a Sakya-sect home
Dhi village: upper Mustang
The people of Mustang are of Tibetan stock. Their religion is Tibetan Buddhism, and most belong to the Sakya sect. Characteristically Sakya gompas (temples) and houses are decorated with vertical stripes of colour. Throughout Mustang there is plenty of naturally occurring pigment. The locals collect this, mix a slurry and, once each year slosh it over their walls. At times they simply tip a bucket but this house has been painted more carefully.
Red is the colour of Jamyang (Manjusri Skt.) the red-skinned god of Wisdom. White represents Chenresik (Avalokiteshvara Skt.), embodying the quality of compassion. His mantra is Om mani padme hum, the ubiquitous invocation heard throughout the Tibetan world and familiar in myriads of mani--stones. Blue, or grey is the colour of Chana-Dorje (Vajrapani Skt.), a fierce deity who protects against evil.
