Ryangbyung cliffs

Cliffs at Ryangbyung, Mustang
Ryangbyung: Mustang

Deep in a narrow gorge is the chorten which created itself, Ryangbyung. It's a stalagmite, which does indeed resemble a chorten, especially with the eye of faith. The cave is on a side-stream of the main Kali Gandaki which roars only a few hundred metres away down to the right. This site has been holy since probably pre-Buddhist times. On the side of the cave are several self-created images requiring even greater leaps of faith.. The site used be deserted but in the past six years an elderly Tibetan has taken up residence. He makes offerings each day and lights small juniper fires to appease the gods. Its an easy walk down to this site, but a hard slog up. However, the effort of reaching Ryanbyung is more than worthwhile.

The dark hole high in the facing-cliff is nest to lammergeirs, the huge and attractive Himalayan vulture.
