Lake Pelkhu Tso

Pelkhu Tso
Lake Pelkhu Tso, southern Tibet.

This view of the lake's western shore is taken looking south towards the Pelkhu Kangri range. At an altitude of 4,600m the lake has no natural outlet but unlike many Tibetan lakes further to the north it has little salinity and its waters are clear and drinkable.
The local name Lhatso Zhitso, describes it's kidney shape. Herds of nomads roam the slopes around grazing herds of yak and sheep.
On the eastern shore, near the lake's constriction is a meditation cave of Milarepa, the Tibetan mystic, who was born nearby. A monastery, La Phuk gompa, huddles beneath vertical cliffs at this point.
