Bhuri Gandaki gorge, Manaslu region,
Nepal
The river gorges of Nepal rarely feature in travel literature. Justifiably the emphasis tends to be about the superb mountains which help make Nepal so photogenic.
For fifty million years, as the Himalaya rose from the depths of the Tethys sea, the rivers draining these new mountains have carved stupendous gorges. Such a one, is the Bhuri Gandaki draining Mt Manaslu, at 8163m the seventh of the world's great mountains. This is a gorge of wild water, high waterfalls, vivid butterflies and tiny villages. A gorge of high mountains and rice paddy... irresistable!
For me, a trek to Manaslu is the chance to experience the variety of Nepal from the highest to the lowest. Marvellous!Next month: The warp of India.
