Smoothing the path: Tibet

a grader driver in Tibet
Diane McKinnon driving a grader Tibet.

This unlikely looking apparatus is a grader for smoothing the roads of Tibet. Usually it is drawn by a tiny tractor but at times a stocky pony is enlisted to provide the motive power.
Very few roads in Tibet are paved. Most are metal, requiring regular maintainence by road-crews who sport fluourescent red jackets like their Western counterparts.
Diane lacks the standard jacket, but has always fancied herself at the controls of a grader. Here she is fulfilling her dreams perhaps on a less powerful machine than she had hoped!
Thanks to Rodney Lewington who took this photo during a recent tour in Tibet.
