Tibet
There are many images like this in the temples and caves of Western Tibet. It is impossible not to see it as a portrait of a real individual, but we do not know who. The receeding hairline is probable natural rather than a stylish monks tonsure and the fine features suggests that the subject was possible ethnic Indian rather than Tibetan.
Some damage has occured as a result of time. Throughout Western Tibet the major destruction was due to the barbarians of the Cultural Revolution but fortunately, they paid little attention to paintings, mostly confining their rampage to destroying the statues.Next month:   The Buddha of Compassion!
