near Chiu Gompa, Kailas region,
Tibet
This chorten stands on the shores of Lake Manasarovar, at 5550m, the highest, large fresh-water lake in the world. Holy to both Hindus and Tibetans. It is said that to bathe in the lake is to '...wash away the sins of a thousand lifetimes.'
The view is south towards the Himalaya marking the border between Tibet and Nepal. The large snow mountain is Gurla Mandhata 7728m. Its peaks and ridges forming a swastika, the ancient Sanskrit symbol of the universe's infinity.
Out of sight, immediately behind is Chiu (bird) gompa, perched on a crag overlooking lake and mountain.
