Mt Manaslu from Sama
This view of Manaslu from the north is taken at the village of Sama. At 8,163m Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world. In 1952 it was recconoitered by the British climber and explorer Tilman who recognised it as a formidable climbing challenge. Four successive Japanese expeditions were unsuccessful until their final attempt in 1956. In accordance with climbing tradition it thus became known in mountaineering circles as 'the Japanese mountain'. Every year one or two expeditions attempt the climb.
During the course of our trek we circle the mountain, crossing a pass, the Larkye La, high on the north shoulder of the peak. [towards the right of this photo] Its abrupt character and small villages around its base, make Manaslu one of the most photogenic of all Nepal mountains.
