Dumje village, Tsum region

Dumje is unusual in that unlike most villages of this region it has stone roofs rather than wood. There is good supply of quality slate nearby which provides a permanent roofing material, unlike wooden shingles which have to be replaced every ten years or so.

At the time of year we visit harvesting of barley is being completed. The sheaves are taken to stone threasing floors around each village and beaten with wooden flails to extract the grain. The young people who do this usually sing. To be high above a village, to hear the singing and rhythmic thump of flails is magic!

If you would like to experience some of the excitement of trekking around Manaslu, you'll have to be quick as our trek in 2002 starts in late September. There are still some spaces...
