Mt Manaslu 8156m from Lo village, Nupri region
Trekking around Manaslu is one of the most scenically spectacular treks in all Nepal. Manaslu, the seventh highest mountain in the world was first climbed by a Japanese party in 1956. It is regarded as one of the most difficult 8,000m peaks. This photo was taken approaching Lo village on the northern side of the mountain. We are heading for the Larkya La (pass) which lies behind the smaller peak in the distance.
The peaks are seen here in early October after a recent fall of snow. All these altitudes snow can happen at any time of the year but in the main post-monsoon season it is rare to get falls so heavy to hinder progress. In the ten treks that we have taken around Manaslu we have only been stopped once by snow. That was in 1996 when a huge snowstorm covered the entire Himalaya and Tibet, extending right into China, causing huge loss of animal life and quite a few human deaths as well. Apart from being cold we had no major problems but had to abandon crossing the Larkya pass which was not open for almost a month.
If you would like to experience some of the excitement of trekking around Manaslu, you'll have to be quick as our trek in 2002 starts in late September. There are still some spaces...
