Musicians - Swamimalai
Performing quartet. Sterling Swamimalai Hotel, Tamil Nadu
The classic music of South India was codified in the Vedic literature before 2000 BCE and its roots are deeply entwined in temple ritual. The musicians depicted have all be classically trained, but here they play a wonderful synthesis which owes a lot to jazz. On the left is Devi Prasad, the leader, playing a double-ended drum the mridangam. There are two amplified violins and on the right, a ghatam, or tuned clay pot, played with the hands.
Most nights, this group play at the Sterling Swamimalai hotel. They are amongst the best spontaneous musicians I have ever heard. Another example of the magic which is South India!
