Courtyard: Sterling Swamimalai hotel
Sterling Swamimalai Hotel, Tamil Nadu
This hotel was developed around the 1880s home of a Brahmin businessman. A group of tile-roofed cottages cluster around the main buildings linked by a series of courtyards, like this. Swamimalai is a small town famous for its lost-wax bronze casting industry. The great 'Chola bronzes' of the 9th to 11th centuries, were made in tiny workshops here. The workshops are still busy and continue to produce quality bronzes for the Indian and international market.
