a Visiting Salesman

a visiting salesman, Mustang
Upper Mustang

Because few tourists visit Mustang, its proximity to Tibet and its own Tibetan heritage there are items of Tibetan antiquity for sale. The rights and wrongs of this commerce can be argued interminably, but the fact is, that the trade exists. Most campsites are visited by a locals, like the guy in the blue cap, keen to do business. He is selling an unusual Tibetan thanka. Items like this were readily available a few years ago but are now increasingly more rare. Thus a visit to Mustang, or anywhere for that matter, is best made without anticipation of acquiring some fabulous antique. Genuine older items now for sale mostly come from more distant regions of Tibet and less-than-genuine goodies from the workshops of India.
