MUSTANG, NEPAL

the load carrier
above Kali Gandaki river, near Tangbe Lower Mustang
In the upper Kali Gandaki valley loads are carried by mule. This one is heading down valley with our red kitbags and a tent. In most parts of Nepal trekking loads are carried by human porters but the Mustang region is sufficiently expansive to make animal transport more practical.
Below, are the braided streams of Kali Gandaki, draining all the Mustang region. The series of terraces across the river are reminders of times when this river was a gigantic torrent draining remnants of the ancient sea of Tethys. One of the great attractions of walking through Mustang is to see these signs of age-old geology. Another is to walk with mules. In my experience they are uncomplaining, willing and quite charming.
