Visitors from Tibet

MUSTANG, NEPAL

Tibetan girls, Upper Mustang, Nepal
Nomad visitors to Lo Manthang

These girls live just across the border from the township of Lo Manthang, capital of Mustang. When we visited Lo in 2005 there was a famous Tibetan Lama in town. He was on a parish visit from his monastery in Kathmandu.

These younsters had travelled with their families to pay respects to the lama and to experience the 'big city' of Lo. It takes them a day to travel from Tibet into Nepal from their village on the southern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Their homes is remote, even by Tibetan standards and they were astonished to see Europeans for the first time.

This picture reminds me yet again of the elegance and style with which Tibetan nomad women greet the world.
