the streets of Kalahasti, southern Andhra Pradesh
buffalo carts
This street scene could be almost any small town in Tamil Nadu. Bullock carts, bycycles and motorbikes are ubiquitous. We arrive here at Kalahasthi by an overnight train from Hyderabad. It's a small place which sees few foreigners arriving by rail. There is a wonderful temple here, but we have come to see several of the kalamkari masters who work here.
It the 17th and 18th century, kalamkari was a huge export business from this Malabar coast of southern India. Now only a few workshops produce this art.
