Here at the Weaver Service Centre in Hyderabad, groups of skilled artisans devise new designs and techniques. These ideas are then taken to weaving villages. On the right is a new design drawn on graph paper; the wooden device is for punching holes in the cardboard blanks; the desired design determines how each single card is punched; there is a separate card for each 'pick' - throw of the warp (cross-ways) thread; a sequence of cards awaits transferral to the Jacquard loom.

Some complicated designs require thousands of cards to control the loom. This Jacquard technique was introduced into India in the middle 1800's and has been continuously adapted since that time.
