TIBET

The grandest light show on earth.

sunset, Lake Manosarovar, Tibet
Campsite, on the shores of Lake Manosarovar.,Tibet.

The lake shore at the northeastern tip of Manasarovar is flat and grassy. Small streams meander to the lake and the grass is soft to walk. It is a magical place to camp.
This is particularly true in early autumn when, for the most part, days are long and sunny.
At this altitude, 4,470m, the sky seems extraordinarly close to earth where abrupt changes in weather are commonplace. At times dark clouds disgorge torrential rains only a few kilometres away while we immerse in brilliant sun. At sunset the light can become especially dramatic, binding heaven, the lake and our tents in a lucid glow.
'Manasarovar a "lake conceived in the mind of God" is sacred to Hindus and Tibetan Buddhists. Devotees come to bathe in the sacred waters and toll their beads as they circumambulate this brilliant turquoise disc. The prevelence of such intense physical beauty intensifies the spiritual significance of this remote land.
