Sunlight & storm: west of Lo, Mustang, Nepal

slopes west of Lo, Mustang
slopes west of Lo Manthang Mustang, Nepal

Lo is the capital of Mustang. Nowadays a tiny citadel of about 400 inhabitants, it was once famous and rich. Lying on one of the great trade routes between India and Tibet it sits in the middle of 'the Plain of Aspiration', Manthang . In western literature the names are combined thus, Lo Manthang.

At these altitudes the play of light and dark within the landscape is intense. At one moment, brilliant sunshine, the next a hailstorm! This photo was taken on the trail west of Lo heading towards the ancient gompa of Ghar. It did hail, but not on us!
