Amaranthus in rice terraces: Tsum region
The approach to the Tsum region, behind Mt Ganesh is noted for extensive terraces which rise steeply from the valley floor towards the skyline. Mostly they grow rice but at times many tiny fields are a blaze of red fronds of Amaranthus.
Also known as Salvia, Amaranthus is used in high mountain regions as a grain. It is highly nutritious. These and other magical sights are part of our Manaslu trek.Next month: Stairway to the gods
