Amaranthus, Tsum: Nepal

Amaranthus caudatus, Tsum
Amaranthus caudatus: Tsum region

This is the Indian variety of the ancient grain plant which used be used extensively in the Himalaya. There are many species native to India, Africa and Peru.

Our Feb 2002 photo of the month showed a terrace of this blazing in the green of surrounding rice paddy. Amaranthus is one of the prettiest crops on earth. The beautiful colours of its broad leaves, stems and flowers - purple, red, gold - create firey fields that blaze across the mountainsides. The plant grows vigorously, tolerates drought, heat and pests and its prolific tiny seeds are one of the most nutricious foods grown.

It is another living exhibit which makes this Manaslu trek so photographically exciting!
