a Dhoka, Tsum: Nepal

dhoka on wall, Tsum
dhoka: Tsum region

This fine dhoka is used throughout the Himalaya for load carrying. They vary in quality according to the tightness of the bamboo weave. In the lower valleys north of Mts Ganesh and Manaslu bamboo thrives and is used by villagers for many household purposes. Bamboo is the favourite diet of the Himalayan black bear. When bears take a snooze in bamboo thickets they can be disturbed by villagers passing by. Unfortunately the bears have poor eyesight and when frightened stand and lash out with their powerful paws. Many severe facial injuries result, but it is very rare for anyone to be killed by a bear.

I've never seen a bear in the wild in Nepal, nor do I wish to! But the country we traverse on the Manaslu trek is home many of these animals.

Next month: not sure yet... but not a picture of Himalayan bear!
