monks reading, Lo Gompa, Nupri region
Nupri is the region immediately behind Mt Manaslu. The way of life has changed little here for centuries and there are some fine gompas (Tibetan temples). These monks are from Lo, one of the main villages. They are of the Ningma sect (Red-hat), regarded as the oldest branch of Tibetan Buddhism. Part of their practice is to read from the scriptures. Old books are hand-written or printed on hand-made paper like the one seen here. At Lo there is a particularly famous library, with many of the books bound between thick slabs of carved wood.
When trekking through this Manaslu region we make a feature of visiting temples like this. There is always a friendly welcome, with the monks delighted to show their treasures.
