what is it?
Lo Gompa, Nupri region, Nepal
It's a Tibetan book. The main volume, containing many sheets of handmade paper, is carefully wrapped in red cloth - the red indicates its religious nature. Outside the main package is draped another layer of brocaded silk and cotton. One end of this, rather grubby in this picture, faces out at the each end of the volume. On lifting this flap you find a library record for each book.
Encasing the book are two slabs of wood. The top facing slab and the ends can be finely carved. The library in Lo Gompa is several hundred years old and the books are almost all hand-writtten. The carved book slabs here are particularly fine.
If you have looked at the photos of 2002 you will see a similar book being used by two monks. If you come trekking with us Around Manaslu in 2004 you will be able to views these treasures for yourself.
