mustard fields

mustand fields, Trangmar: Mustang
Trangmar: Mustang

The colour in this photo is true to life. At the time of year we trek to Mustang the mustard is ripening. In the desert environment of this trans-Himalayan region the green of irrigated fields is welcome visual relief - and the vivid yellow of mustard is a shock.

The cliffs of Trangmar are the death-stains of a demon who was killed here in mythic times. Every significant feature of countryside has it's own story to place it in the emotional and religious landscape. Tibetans were originally anamists who sought to understand their world by populating the landscape with gods and demons. Whether beneficient or fearful, the deities of the landscape demanded to be propitiated or at least, acknowledged. We western sophisticates no longer see with that vision and are probably the poorer for our modern ways.
