a Village oasis

MUSTANG, NEPAL
Tangye village
When you trek into the 'restricted area' of Mustang you are travelling through a fractured desert landscape. People have lived here for at least three thousand years. Their survival was in large part dependent on the development of irrigation canals to water the fields.
A delight of trekking through this region is the sudden appearance of green fields in the midst of a parched landscape, like here on the outskirts of Tangye. Many ancient towns in the Mustang region are gradually loosing their population as their youngsters head off to city lights. Evidence of this depopulation can be seen at the very left edge of the cultivated region where fields have been abandoned.
This view is on the sixth day of our Mustang trek. Tomorrow's trail slants out of town to the terrace above and the wonders which lie beyond.
