Tetang village, Lower Mustang, NEPAL
Tetang village (in foreground), looking west.
This view comes on the third day of the trek, soon after entering the 'restricted area' of Mustang. Immediately to the right of the seated Sherpa is the walled-village of Tetang. This village is thought to date from around 500CE. The high, windowless external walls and single city gate, speak of times when this whole region was a collection of petty kingdoms involved in frequent wars with their neighbours. To walk through the narrow lanes of this village is a step back to medieval times.
The cake-layered cliffs and vivid green of growing barley are a constant accompanyment of trekking at this time.
