candle offerings, Xinjiao Si

Thirty kilometres outside Xi'an is the burial place of Xuanzang - one of the world's greatest travellers and a famous translator of Buddhist scriptures. Few non-Chinese come to this delightful temple where ancient trees shade the monastery buildings. When he died in 664 his remains were brought here to be placed in a small pagoda. In the base of the pagoda is a contemporary statue of the great monk, so we can see what this extraordinary man looked like. Nearby are the memorial pagodas of his closest disciples. If you wish, you can light a candle.
Xinjiao Si, is one of my favourite places on our Silk Road tour through China and Central Asia.
