Yellow rhododendron, Kunde village
Kunde village from above, about 1969,Nepal
This photo was taken about 1969. I have been back many times to Kunde since then. If you stand in this spot today, the thing that is strikingly different about the village is how the timber-shingle roofs have been replaced with tin. From a photographers perspective, the change is not an improvement but for the Sherpas, it means they do not have leaky homes during the monsoon rains.
Compared to the 1960's, there are a few more houses, but basically the layout of the village, the chorten and the mani (prayer stone) walls are unchanged. And, in many ways, so are the lives of the people.
The rhododendron in this photo is R. campanulatum. Our rhododendron trek in 2000 will be accompanied by our alpine botanist, Bill Sykes, who has a vast experience of Himalayan plants.Next month: Open grasslands: Tibet
