Grasslands, near Kyirong, Tibet
Grassy hills near Kyirong. The Himalaya beyond:
Tibet.
Immediately to the north of Kathmandu, and beyond the ramparts of the Himalaya, is the remote Kyirong region of Tibet. It takes three to four days to drive to Kyirong from Kathmandu. The road winds through the hills of Nepal onto the open vastness of the Tibetan plateau.
This photo is taken on the approach to Kyirong at an altitude of 5000m. It is summer. A time when these dry dusty hills are transformed with swathes of grass and flowers.
We took a group to Kyirong in June 1999 and will return at a similar time next year. The region had only just been opened to foreigners by the Chinese authorities so for many local people our group was their first experience of European people.
It is a place where cascades of glaciers flow down steep mountains to shingle-roofed villages. Magic!Next month: The ani's rosary

Preceeding that trek we shall be in Nepal on a botanical trek to view rhododendron of the Solu regon.
