....and the Cave

Rangbyang cave, Upper Mustang, NEPAL
the main stalagmite and its chortens
The cave sits high on the face of a vertical cliff. It's main feature is the huge stalagmite which is reputed to have 'built itself'. Such miracles have attracted interest from pre-historic times. Towards the rear of the cave are images which in the view of Tucci, the great Tibetan scholar, long pre-date Buddhism.
What we see are recent paintings of O-pame (Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha); Guru Rimpoche who is credited with introducing Buddhism to Tibet; a 'Medicine Buddha' ; and Pawa Chenresig, the Buddha of Compassion.
Few locals or foreigners come to this old place. It is well worth the effort. For another view of this cave see the picture of the month for February 2005.
